CLUBbleu on DARK~asian~ENERGY [singa~core tour] 2016

CLUBbleu combine game controllers, motion sensors, e-drums and live-electronics with field recordings and analogue synthesizers. Being greatly inspired by influences from classical music, electro-acoustic music, Electronica, Triphop, Clicks&Cuts and Death Metal, CLUBbleu create their own musical cosmos based on urban soundscapes, sparkling synths, deep drones and broken blast beats, a style they simply call Next to their activities in the field of electroacoustic compositions, the redefinition of interactive electronic chamber music in connection to elaborate forms of musical scores represents the central topic of CLUBbleu ’s artistic approach. Further CLUBbleu research on different methods of sound synthesis and develop their own audio software. For their audio-visual live shows CLUBbleu collaborate regularly with different visual artists. In the past three years CLUBbleu mainly focused on their field recording -project „DARK ENERGY“, a series of city portraits, dealing with different sonic characteristics of urban environments according to architectual developments, social structures and the cultural background of a city. . CLUBbleu is Felix Leuschner and Julia Mihály. Felix is a classically trained drummer and composer with the main focus on music theatre pieces, as well as chamber music and vocal pieces in connection to live-electronics. Strong influences by visual arts and architecture mark essential components in his compositions. As part of CLUBbleu, Felix plays e-drums connected to Max /MSP, using the instrument as a giant controller for real time sound synthesis. Julia is a composer-performer. She studied classical singing and electronic composition. The crossover of different music styles, such as contemporary vocal music, old school computer game music, trashy pop music tunes and electro-acoustic music, is probably the most outstanding feature of her compositions and performances. Within CLUBbleu, Julia plays analogue synths, game controllers and toy instruments connected to Max /MSP. . CLUBbleu are currently working on their new project FUCK USHI M∆ ZOMBIES, that will be premiered 2017. A deep blue sponge relief by Yves Klein marks the setting of their first encounter. It was in June 2012, exactly one week after the 50th anniversary of Klein’s death. Julia was sitting in the entrance hall of the Music Theatre in Gelsenkirchen (Musiktheater im Revier), working on some Max/MSP patch in preparation for her upcoming sound installation, when Felix passed by, looking curiously at her laptop screen. At that time Felix was composer in residence at the theatre, working on his opera „Sprung in die Leere“ about – guess who – Yves Klein! Anyway…He stopped, engaging her immediately in a pretty nerdy conversation on topics around different kinds of soft- and hardware. Actually Julia was very surprised to get sucked all of a sudden into an enormously intensive talk about Coding and Live-Electronics with a complete stranger in this place! Well,… both artists discovered their common enthusiasm for experimental electronic music. But beyond this, they left each other forgetting to exchange business cards… A few days later both participated the same event in the theatre, noticing that the other one is around, but without any effort to meet or to talk to each other. Shortly after the end of the event Julia left the house rather quickly. Already sitting in the car, on her way back home, she recognized that she had forgotten something inside. At the same time Felix left the building. And this is the moment of a strange coincidence that made the following story of CLUBbleu possible: Julia went back to the theatre building, taking the shortest way straight across the intersection, where Felix was crossing in exactly the same moment. What a… coincidence, … not to say destiny ?! They carried on with their conversation on coding and music, this time fortunately without forgetting to exchange numbers before finishing their talk. By the way, preoccupied after the conversation Julia forgot again what she left inside and went right back to her car. Until today she she has no clue what she left at the Music Theatre in Gelsenkirchen…. And who knows, if CLUBbleu existed today without this accidental reencounter! With a mind blowing multi-media performance under the title “Club Bleu”, Felix wanted to erect a memorial on Yves Klein’s honor. Therefore he invited sound and video artists to join him. So beside blue drinks and blue chocolate the musicians served an energetically pulsating electro-cocktail as intensive as a jump into Klein’s immaterial zone! For Felix and Julia this performance was meant to be the electrification for everything that was going to be part of their further collaboration within CLUBbleu. Julia and Felix spent the autumn 2012 together, hiding in a caravan, somewhere in the countryside of South Bavaria. Fresh air, a dark starlit sky, a lake and all leftovers the caravan contained made the perfectly inspiring atmosphere for creating new concert programs. After some weeks, with a detailed exposé for a new performance on their hard drive, both left the caravan heading towards Frankfurt. At this time they started developing plans for their own recording studio, a place to be called Orange Bubble, which was first of all based in Offenbach, later in Maintal, and finally in Frankfurt. Julia and Felix spent quite a few weeks painting the walls while listening to Radio X, laying pink Hello Kitty carpet, adapting the facilities, installing equipment and supporting the local Kebab take-away and Asia Restaurant with regular orders. At the end of the year Felix and Julia staged their version of a “contemplative” Christmas Oratorio in a small chapel somewhere in the Nowhereland of Hesse. Deep drones, creepy detuned organ sounds, a classical voice, live-electronics and chosen quotes taken out of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Weihnachtsoratorium” marked some of the highly disturbing ingredients that turned this December 23, the evening before Christmas Eve, to a “very special” moment of village community contemplation… The electronic duo CLUBbleu was officially born. In spring 2013 CLUBbleu moved into the facilities of the Atelier for Sound Research (Atelier Klangforschung) at the University of Würzburg, an empty, former general residence of the U.S. Army, abandoned after the Cold War. But now they shared the space in a threesome, followed by their “special friend”, Emil: It was an intensive period of research on the topic of gender specific behaviours that let them stay in a public hut village over the summer 2013, as an installation project of the Pinakothek of Modern Art in Munich. For research purpose they made experiments with surrounding neighbors and passersby, meeting them all dressed up in so called Morph Suites, covering the complete face, hiding any gender specific reference. In preparation for CLUBbleu ’s performance project „Abgesang an [ˌsiˈmɔn]“ they collaborated with the ENT department of the University Hospital Würzburg, generating spectral imprints of their voices. The aim of the performance „Abgesang an [ˌsiˈmɔn]“ was the achievement of total androgyny, both visually and aurally: Visually all identifying features of the performers were covered, erasing all traces of gender, making any optical differentiation between the two protagonists almost impossible. On the auditory level any further possibility of distinguishing between the two either through their individual vocal character or gender was destroyed by electronic distortion of the voices. The interaction between the visual and the auditory was confused. One sense draws a logical conclusion through the perception of the other. Thus all aural perception generates a visual counterpart in the imagination of the listener, and vice-versa. During the time at the Atelier for Sound Research Felix and Julia one day caught a bad cold. For recovery reasons they spent one week in bed, watching all kinds of zombie movies they could get, including all previously released episodes of The Walking Dead. At the end of this week they felt not only healthy again, but also filled with a bunch of ideas for a new performance. This was going to be a project dealing with a special kind type of field recordings, namely sounds you would usually find at so called Non-Places. It was meant to be a performance that concentrates on acoustic characteristics of chosen cities. Title of the project: DARK ENERGY. Over the course of the year CLUBbleu made preparations for several field recording trips within their DARK ENERGY project, beginning with Würzburg, Munich and Augsburg. The first editions of the project were the DARK ENERGY [munich album], premiered at Signalraum Munich, and the DARK ENERGY [Augsburg album], premiered at lab.30 Festival for Sound Art Augsburg. For each of these concerts CLUBbleu launched an individual DARK ENERGY CD in own production. . After the first experiences within the DARK ENERGY project, CLUBbleu felt the desire to come into artistic exchange with their favorite German city, Frankfurt. They extended the original DARK ENERGY concept, giving more weight to the topic of sound recycling instead of too much thoughts about zombie apocalypse… No matter if they had to go on top of the Main Tower or under water in the river Main, they spread their search for acoustic traces on various parts of urban space. For one year, whether it was hot or cold or humid, loud or quiet outside, CLUBbleu were on tour equipped with tons of recording gear. Remaining 10 hours next to the Runway 18 West at Frankfurt Airport, catching sounds of departing Airplanes – no problem for CLUBbleu. Standing up in the middle of the night to spend hours and hours outside in the cold rain, waiting for the explosion of the Afe Tower in Frankfurt, CLUBbleu were on site, having their recording devices focused. In summer 2014 the fruits were ripe: In cooperation with the historisches museum frankfurt, CLUBbleu launched their DARK ENERGY [frankfurt album], a CD full of field recordings as much as the artist’s blood, sweat and tears! Frankfurt’s Department of Publicity took notice of CLUBbleu ’s artistic output and dedicated them a whole portrait campaign on Frankfurt’s official homepage. At once this attracted the attention of different German Radio and TV stations, that wanted to report about the “Sound Searchers of Frankfurt”, as CLUBbleu were suddenly called. After CLUBbleu had immortalized “their” Frankfurt as part of the DARK ENERGY composition series, CLUBbleu seeked far-off. For three months they went on a field recording trip to Singapore, trying to catch the most characteristic sounds of this southeastern city. The duo dived into this multi-cultural metropolis and returned with a bunch of extraordinary Singaporean soundscapes. Back in Frankfurt, perfectly equipped with frozen pizza, French Fries, gingerbread and apple wine, they crawled away into the Orange Bubble Studio for producing their next CD called “DARK~asian~ENERGY [singacore album]“. In early summer 2015 the mastering of the album was finished! And since the CLUBbleu brain is permanently in process of generating new ideas for upcoming projects, Julia and Felix already jumped into the next conspirative period of creative immateriality, consuming brainfood such as Sponge Bob or King of Queens, interrupted by infinite Pink Floyd listening sessions. So beware of FUCK USHI M∆ ZOMBIES! To be continued. . . . © Website: CLUBbleu, 2015 © cover photo: Ela Mergels, 2015 || www.elaela.de ||buʞitpantroniʞ

In autumn 2014 CLUBbleu went on a Singapore field recording trip trying to catch the most characteristic and unique urban sounds of the city. For 3 months the duo dived into the pulsating multi-cultural metropolis and returned to Frankfurt with a bunch of extraordinary Singaporean soundscapes to produce their upcoming CD: DARK~asian~ENERGY [singa~core album] . Excerpts: . . . CLUBbleu perceived Singapore as a city in which the social life is highly influenced by a clash of disparate cultures, creating altogether a common, „transnational“, Singaporean character. In connection to this CLUBbleu explore the interstices between these cultures from an external point of view, trying to research at the various points of contact in between. CLUBbleu combine sounds of chinese markets, speaking doors and elevators, jungle soundscapes, indian temples, disordered mobile devices soundscapes, light rail transits, shopping mall sounds and the typical mixture-scapes of frogs, cicadas and car engines within the compositional creation of their DARK~asian~ENERGY [singa~core album]. CLUBbleu feed this delicate sound cocktail into Max/MSP patches that control interactive reacting electronic instruments. The „DARK~asian~ENERGY [singa~core album]“ will be released in 2016 by Gruenrekorder. . For their “DARK ENERGY [frankfurt album]“ CLUBbleu developed a special method for recycling urban soundscapes into musical sound material. The sound spectrum of the city Frankfurt am Main as a symbiosis of engine noises and domesticated nature turns into a fundamental element of compositional structure. For over one year CLUBbleu recorded various public spaces in Frankfurt focussing on so-called non-places. During their explorations concerning the musical quality of public spaces they observed a striking imbalance of auditory and visual impressions. Associated with this, CLUBbleu question whether urban spaces – originally designed as local recreation areas – over time change into acoustic non-places. CLUBbleu created a unique „sound of frankfurt“, based on polymorphic rhythm structures of sound waves reflecting between skyscrapers, sounds of circular saws and hammer blows spreading over the town, Europe’s largest building demolition to date and underwater recordings of the river Main. Especially the river works as a sort of natural band-pass-filter, that releases certain frequencies of the urban soundscapes, which are combined with sounds of ship’s propellers and flow generated noise. The recontextualization of non-place sounds is part of CLUBbleu ’s recycling process as well as the collection of sound material, its synthetic modulation and its integration into their compositional approach. . . The „DARK ENERGY [frankfurt album]“ was released in summer 2014 in cooperation with the historisches museum frankfurt as part of the exhibition Stadtlabor unterwegs – Park in progress. ++++++++++++++++++++++ Click & Listen: DARK ENERGY [frankfurt album] – Flash Version: . . . . CLUBbleu ’s first CD production, the „DARK ENERGY [munich album]“ was released after the premiere in July 2013 @ Signalraum in Munich. First of all, inspired by apocalyptic horror movies and series just like 28 Days Later or The Walking Dead, CLUBbleu focussed on places that are considered as so called Non-Places, as Marc Augé describes them in his „Introduction to Supermodernity“. They were searching for places in public space that are either abandoned nowadays but seem to be highly frequented in the past, today’s „forgotten“ places of civilization, or places that look abandoned because they are designed to function without any need of communication with human beings, equipped with automats and computers. All in all places that look ugly, dark, unpleasant. It was quite a challenge to find these places in a city like Munich, clean, friendly and so … bavarian, which is – to be honest – more a mutated village than a big city. But with a bit of patience CLUBbleu managed to scrape out Munich’s dark energy. Civilization leaves its traces everywhere… At the invitation of lab.30 Medienkunst Festival Augsburg they released a „DARK ENERGY [augsburg album]“ in October 2013. . . . . . . . © website: CLUBbleu, 2015 © cover photo: Ela Mergels, 2015 || www.elaela.de ||DARK~asian~ENERGY [singa~core album], 2014 – 2016
